1. Attendance Policy

Students are required to attend classes regularly and complete a minimum of 110 instructional hours per course. Absences must not exceed 18 hours for full-credit courses and 8 hours for half-credit courses. Absences without valid reasons will be reported to parents/guardians, and frequent absences may result in academic penalties or withdrawal. Students missing tests or assignments must provide a doctor’s note or parental letter to qualify for extensions or rescheduling.

2. Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to:

  • Complete all assigned coursework on time.

  • Respect teachers, staff, and fellow students.

  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality.

  • Follow all school policies and procedures. Students failing or withdrawing from courses may jeopardize their eligibility for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

3. Assessment and Evaluation

Student achievement is evaluated based on:

  • 70% coursework throughout the semester.

  • 30% final examination or culminating project.

Achievement levels:

80–100%: Level 4 (Outstanding)

  • 70–79%: Level 3 (High, Provincial Standard)

  • 60–69%: Level 2 (Moderate)

  • 50–59%: Level 1 (Passable)

  • Below 50%: No credit granted

Evaluation aligns with Ontario’s Growing Success guidelines, including observations, conversations, and student products.

4. Reporting Student Achievement

Progress reports are issued three times per semester:

  • Early progress report

  • Midterm report

  • Final report after course completion

Reports are archived in each student's Ontario Student Record (OSR).

5. Code of Conduct and Safe Schools

Hansen Academy upholds an environment of respect, dignity, and inclusivity. Discrimination, harassment, and violence are strictly prohibited. Misconduct may result in verbal warnings, suspensions, expulsions, or legal action.

6. Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) Requirements

Students must complete:

  • 30 credits (18 compulsory + 12 optional)

  • 40 hours of community involvement

  • Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) or course

Specific compulsory credits and substitution policies are based on Ministry of Education guidelines.

7. Community Involvement

Students must complete 40 volunteer hours through approved activities such as assisting seniors, environmental projects, tutoring, and volunteering at charitable organizations. Paid work or activities during school hours do not qualify.

8. Literacy Requirements (OSSLT and OSSLC)

Students typically attempt the OSSLT in Grade 10. Students failing twice may complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC) instead.

9. Online Learning (E-learning)

  • Courses are asynchronous with 4-month completion deadlines.

  • Students must login at least 2–3 times per week.

  • Prolonged inactivity may result in withdrawal from the course.

Technical requirements include a Google account and access to stable internet and appropriate hardware (computer, tablet, or smartphone).

10. Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty (plagiarism, cheating) may result in a mark of zero, course failure, or other disciplinary action. Photo ID and video call verification are required before course commencement.

11. Special Education and Supports

Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are available for students requiring accommodations. Hanson Academy also supports English Language Learners (ELL) through specialized ESL programming.

12. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Students may earn credits through the "challenge" or "equivalency" processes for prior learning. Mature students have separate PLAR pathways based on their broader life experiences.

13. Ontario Student Record (OSR) and Transcript (OST)

All academic achievements are recorded in the OSR and official OST. Withdrawal policies are compliant with Ontario’s full disclosure regulations.

14. Acceptable Use of Technology

Students must comply with all copyright laws, respect privacy, and maintain appropriate online behavior. Sharing accounts or distributing course materials without authorization is prohibited.
